![]() It occurred to me then that Yang’s time with us was limited. Without realizing it, I had slipped into thinking of Yang as my son, imagining that one day he’d be raking leaves for his own wife and children. “This is what men do for the family,” I said, gesturing with my beer to the leafless yard. Most importantly, however, this is the moment in the story where an emotional pivot begins and Jim starts to view Yang as more than simply a machine. This quote also stands out for indicating the physicality of Yang. Although, as Jim here admits, neither he nor his wife really did much in the way of treating Yang like an actual member of the family. The sudden collapse of Yang’s head into his bowl of cereal-which he actually does “eat” and which actually does become “waste” which he himself evacuates by cleaning his stomach canister-marks the end of Yang as a member of the family. I hoist him onto my shoulder and carry him through the living room out to the car. He’s heavier than I imagined, his weight that of the eighteen-year-old boy he’s designed to be. I hold him close to me now, bracing my feet solidly beneath my body, and lift. There have been times when, as a joke, one of us might nudge Yang with an elbow and say something humorous like, “Lighten up, Yang!” but that’s been the extent of our contact. While he has lived with us almost as long as Mika, I don’t think anyone besides her has ever hugged or kissed him. Not only is he programmed with a college education level of general knowledge, but he also knows more about Chinese culture than Jim and Kyra will learn in a lifetime. But Jim and Kyra are united in a moral opposition to the whole concept and, besides, there are other reasons for not wanting clones as a permanent babysitter when an option like Yang is available. Jim’s next-door neighbor, George, has no problem with that: both his kids are clones. And what of Yang? Yang is the alternative to the option of using clones to help take care of children. Jim is the first-person narrator of the story, husband to Kyra and adoptive father to a young Chinese girl name Mika. It’s a sudden mechanical movement, and it splashes cereal and milk all over the table. We’re sitting around the table eating Cheerios-my wife sipping tea, Mika playing with her spoon, me suggesting apple picking over the weekend-when Yang slams his head into his cereal bowl. They state that it is the policy and cannot provide refunds. ![]() Moreover, they do not provide refunds (even if it is clear you have not benefited from the subscription). I have been told countless times that it has been sent and that I should receive it, but I still haven't seen a single copy of a magazine I subscribed to more than 7 months ago! I strongly suggest you avoid this company at all costs. EDIT (8th July 2023): Another 3 months have passed, and yep, you guessed it, still no magazine to be found. Very bad, and should be avoided at all costs. I have contacted customer services by phone and email and all they have done is apologise and insist that they have sent out a new issue (obviously to someone else as I haven't seen it). I subscribed to Racecar Engineering magazine in December 2022 and to date (11th April 2023) I still haven't received a single issue, which is a disgrace. Really bad, as you can see from other customer reviews. It's abhorrent that Chelsea Magazine Company take people's money with zero intention of sending out the magazines they have paid for. Looking at other reviews here, I am not alone. ![]() If the subscription had been for digital versions of the magazine, this would not be a problem, but I paid for a subscription that stated they would send physical copies as well. Each time I write to Chelsea's support team, I get a generic response saying that it can take up to 45 days for international delivery, that replacements have been sent, and not to forget that I can view the digital versions of the magazine online. I live in Japan and have never had any issues with deliveries from the UK, so I find it very hard to believe that nine separate magazine deliveries have somehow gone missing in transit. To date, I should have received nine magazines however, I have received zero. I took out a subscription to Popshot Quarterly Magazine in February 2022. If you live outside the UK, don't expect to receive the magazines you've paid for.
